Skunna is a 10 year old German wirehaired pointer who has always been active, lean and healthy. His Dad ensures Skunna is up to date on his vaccinations, deworming and flea prevention.

This spring, Skunna’s skin became itchy and inflamed on the inside of his thighs and he could not stop himself from chewing. The skin was covered in multiple, small, infected pustules. Luckily Skunna responded well to a newer medication (Apoquel) that stops the itchy sensation, and antibiotics cleared up the infection.

Spring is a very common time for skin allergies to manifest. In dogs, allergies to pollen (causing hay fever in humans) often cause itchy skin which leads to infections.

Most dogs are a little younger than Skunna when they first experience symptoms.

Fortunately there are newer targeted medications available (Apoquel and Cytopoint) to control the itchy sensation caused by environmental allergies.

Thanks to his diligent owner, Skunna is now again enjoying the sun and spring time.
